Jeffrey R. Jenkins, D.V.M.

Dr. Jenkins is a husband and father.
His wife, Lisa, is the Hospital Manager at the Avian & Exotic
Animal Hospital. His two children, Christopher and Victoria, share
their parents love of animals.
He
received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University
of Utah ('78), his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado
State University ('83), completed a Preceptorship at the Denver
Zoological Gardens ('82) and a "working residency"
with Drs. Walter Rosskopf and Richard Woerpel at the Animal
Medical Centre in Hawthorne, California ('83-'85). He opened
the Avian & Exotic Animal Hospital March 2, 1987.
Dr. Jenkins is recognized internationally
for his work in avian and exotic animal medicine and surgery.
He has lectured both nationally and internationally on a variety
of subjects and his work published in peer reviewed journals,
texts and monographs. Dr. Jenkins holds Diplomate status in
the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in Avian Practice
and was one of the first group of twenty veterinarians to achieve
this honor in 1993.
He has been actively involved with
several veterinary organizations including the Association of
Avian Veterinarians (AAV) where he was President ('92-'93),
Conference Chairman ('91-'92), and Education Chairman ('93-95).
Dr. Jenkins was the Exotic Animal Program Chairman for the Eastern
States Veterinary Association's North American Veterinary Conference
(‘93-’96), one of the worlds largest veterinary conferences.
He was a charter member of the Association of Reptilian and
Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV). He is active in the San Diego
Veterinary Medical Association and the California Veterinary
Medical Association where he sat on the House of Delegates (‘90-98)
and currently acts as an Alternate Deligate. Dr. Jenkins is
active in the National and San Diego Chapter of the American
Association of Laboratory Animal Scientists (AALAS) where he
was a Director and acted as the Program Chairman for the District
8 Annual Conference ('93) and a member of both the American
Society of Laboratory Animal Practitioners (ASLAP) and the California
Laboratory Animal Specialists (CLAMS). He is also a member of
the American Association of Avian Pathologist (AAAP) where he
sits on the Committee on Wildlife Diseases. Dr. Jenkins and
his practice were instrumental in forming the San Diego Chapter
of the House Rabbit Society and Ferrets Anonymous.
Dr.
Jenkins acts as a Consultant and sits on the peer review panel
or acts as a member of the Editorial Review Board for W. B.
Saunders Seminars in Avian and Exotic Pet Medicine, the Journal
of the Association of Avian Veterinarians ,The Compendium for
Continuing Education for Veterinarians and has acted as Guest
Editor for W. B. Saunders Seminars in Avian and Exotic Pet Medicine
edition on Critical Care and W.B. Saunders Clinics of North
America Exotic Animal Medicine edition on Nutrition and Husbandry
of Birds and Exotic Animals.
