Armando G. Burgos, D.V.M.
Dr Burgos

I joined the Avian and Exotic Animal Hospital in September 2006. Prior to joining AEAH, I spent two years in a residency program at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, MA training in avian and exotic animal medicine and surgery.

Before my residency, I spent one year in zoo and exotic program at the Oklahoma State University and the Tulsa Zoo.

My veterinary training started at the University of Missouri, where I was first introduced to birds of prey, which sparked my interest in these amazing animals.

During my veterinary training, I have also been able to experience the different aspects of zoological and wildlife medicine, by spending time at several zoological institutions and wildlife hospitals. I often incorporate these experiences to my everyday practice as it provides a healthier environment for our birds and exotic pets.

I am fortunate and privileged to be able to work on a daily basis with birds and exotic pets. In addition, I am very fortunate to work with a staff that has such a high level of commitment for the special care and needs of exotic pets!

Lisa Jenkins

Lisa JenkinsSince 1993 I’ve served as Hospital Manager for the Avian & Exotic Animal Hospital. I work in an environment surrounded by a variety of interesting people and animals.

This practice is truly extraordinary! Each day is filled with something new and exciting. It’s wonderful being part of such a fabulous team of people.

The staff here are the best of the best! I consider myself lucky to work along side my wonderful husband, Dr. Jeff Jenkins and share in his passion for exotics.

My home is filled with the following members of the animal kingdom:

A norwich terrier, two chihuahuas, two cats, two yellow naped amazon parrots, one myers parrot, one cockateil, one parrotlett, a sinaloan milksnake, four whites tree frogs, two horses and six desert tortoises.

When not working I enjoy spending time with my children. My charismatic son Christopher is now in high school and my beautiful daughter Victoria is in grade school. On the weekends I enjoy riding horses, being outdoors and hanging out with the family.

Shelly Meszaros
Shelly MeszarosI have been working in the veterinary field since 1985. I began as a technician at Melrose Pet Clinic where we worked on dogs and cats. I completed my BA in English Literature from San Diego State University.

I then went on to Mesa College to complete the Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) program.

Upon graduation in 1991, I began work at the Avian and Exotic Animal Hospital and have been the evening receptionist ever since.

What I enjoy most about working here is watching the clients come in, not knowing much about their unique pets. When they leave our hospital, they have the knowledge needed to keep their pets happy and healthy.

I also enjoy seeing the clients interact with the rest of the staff.  It’s exciting to me that everyone who works here has a genuine interest and love of the animals that come through our doors. Each person here has interests in different species and is more than happy to share their knowledge with our clients.

When I am not at work, I enjoy spending time at home with my own pets. My menagerie includes my six cats, two little dogs, and my backyard filled with rescued bunnies that I fix and find homes for.

In my spare time, I also enjoy singing in my church choir, gardening, reading, and working out at the gym because you never know when Mr. Right will walk through the door!

Latisha Zamora
Latisha Zamora

I have been with the Avian & Exotic Animal Hospital since 1994.

As the Senior Laboratory Technician, I am responsible for the entire in-house laboratory testing including hematology, microbiology and parasitology.

I also oversee the comings and goings of diagnostic tests performed outside of the Hospital at reference laboratories.

My position is very unique, as most veterinary clinics send all of their tests to outside reference labs.

Our patients are so "extraordinary" that timing is crucial with diagnostics. When the doctors take a lab sample on your pet, they expect the results back as quickly as possible.

I love my job! What I do is of great importance to the health and well-being of our patients. I have tremendous love and respect for animals and when I strive for excellence in my lab, I know it’s because our patients are counting on us to provide excellent care.

I currently have three cats (Mimi, Crunchy Monkey, and Jeffrey), a Pink-Toe tarantula named Kelly, a beta fish named Dory, and our hamster, Donkey.

I enjoy spending time with my husband, Mel and my great son, Mel Jr. and my beautiful daughter. I have a large family and we spend a great deal of time together. I consider a lot of the staff my close friends and part of my family. I enjoy fellowshipping and worshipping my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Our Faith is my family's foundation around which we have built everything else. I am close to my family and we do a lot of family functions. I consider a lot of the staff my good friends and part of my family. In my spare time, I enjoy fellowshipping and worshiping my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Christine Miller

Christine Miller I have been a part of the Avian & Exotic family since October of 1998, when I was hired as a kennel assistant. After a short four months, I was promoted to receptionist, and eventually a veterinary assistant. Deciding that this career path was the right one for me, I enrolled in the Mesa College Animal Health Technology program and graduated in June 2002.

After graduation and passing the state test, I became a Registered Veterinary Technician. In March 2003 I was promoted to senior technician at Avian & Exotic Animal Hospital, which is my current position.

My responsibilities are enormous and include administering treatments, inducing and maintaining patients under anesthesia, taking x-rays, preparing and assisting with surgeries, inventory, and much more. My job is truly unique and amazing! Everyday, I walk into the office not knowing what a wide variety of animals we are about to work on! It is exciting and never gets dull. I strive to treat each and every animal that comes through the door as if it were my own, with love, respect, and patience. Never does a day go by that I don't appreciate the little critters that walk through our door!

My personal menagerie ranges from feathered to fuzzy to fur-less! I think of all of them as my family, which include my Collie mixes (Saoirse and Sadie) and my feline friends (Jose, Charlie, & Fegis). My perch pals include a teenage Yellow Nape Amazon (Diego), a Green Cheeked Amazon (Beaker), a cockatiel (Cabo), and a large backyard aviary filled with finches and parakeets. I also have geckos, bearded dragons, and tortoises. My favorite of all is my husband Mykee, who puts up with the above chaos and helps make it possible to care for them all!

Amy Smail

Amy SmailI have been working in the animal field since 1998. I stated working for the World Bird Sanctuary training birds of prey for free flight demonstrations for an educational show at Sea World.  In the summer of 1999 I started working for Sea World training mainly birds but also otters, sea lions, dolphins and whales.  I knew the animal field is where I wanted to focus my career, however my increased desire to learn and work in the medical field grew.

In 2004 I made the switch to become a veterinary technician.  I started working for the Animal and Bird Hospital as a vet tech.  My increased desire to focus on avians and exotics lead me to the Avian and Exotic Animal Hospital.  I plan on continuing my education by attending Mesa College to get my RVT license.

At home I currently have a blue and gold macaw (Monty) and  2 green cheek conures (Maui and Ma’alaea).

In my spare time I enjoy going to the beach, surfing (when its hot), running, working out at the gym and spending time with the people I love and my birds.

What I love most about working here is the caring environment, all the staff members have a true passion for animals and it shows in their work. We are all dedicated to health and well-being of every animal that walks through our door.

Sara Harrison

Sara HarrisonMy name is Sara Harrison and I am the newest member of this outstanding Avian and Exotic Animal Hospital. I eagerly came aboard in February 2007 and have enjoyed my kennel assistant job from day one. I am responsible for feeding, cleaning, and the all-around basic care of the animal friends we take care of.

Previous to my employment at AEAH I was an animal care attendant at the Arizona Humane Society. After starting there I knew my career was going to be caring for animals. I adopted two kittens there, Sylvester and Strudel. They will always be cherished members of my family.

I love learning anything I can about these beautiful and amazing creatures we care for. Every day there is something new for me to see or do. I am steadily working towards my goal of attending Mesa College’s veterinary technician program.

I love all animals and want to devote my life to helping them. Animal cruelty and exploitation are issues I feel very strongly about and hope to make a difference in through my career. Some day I hope to be involved with wildlife rehabilitation and conservation.
